Amos Earth Products Reapplies for Permit to Take Water
one million litres a day, 180 days a year for ten years

Amos Earth Products withdrew its previous application to take water last year after an unprecidented negative response from the 350 families who depend on and draw their water from Warings Creek watershed. Now the company has reapplied, requesting a 10-year permit to take the same amount of water for "aggragate washing" onsite. People who wish to comment must do so by October 23. more

CREEK is sponsoring an All-Candidates Meeting for the Municipal Election.

At this point, there are four Mayoralty candidates and two for Ward 8 Councillor. The meeting is to take place at the

North Marysburgh Community Centre on October 16.

Coffee and light refreshments at 7:00 p.m., formal agenda at 7:30 p.m.

Although the meeting is being sponsored by CREEK, it is not limited in terms of issues; all issues of concern to the residents will be addressed.

From Sept. 26th to October 31st

for a fee of $30 per person (max 6, min of 4 per night and visits are weather dependent). You will be picked up at the Waring House Inn at 7 p.m. and taken to the Observatory where you will get a chance to see important owl research. While at the banding station you will be treated to light refreshments and a talk on owl biology. At 10 p.m. you will be returned to the Waring House.

The public is invited to review the preliminary screening criteria checklist and to provide comments of the issues to be addressed in the study to Jacques Whitford Environmental Limited before October 3, 2003. The David Suzuki Foundation is sponsoring an 11-city tour by leading environmental lawyer, professor and author David Boyd.

At free public presentations, Mr. Boyd will discuss how Canada can become a world leader in environmental sustainability. Mr. Boyd's presentations are suitable for anyone with an interest in protecting Canada's natural legacy. He will also discuss his just-released book, Unnatural Law: Rethinking Canadian Law and Policy (UBC Press).

David Boyd is a Senior Associate with the University of Victoria's POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, an Adjunct Professor with Simon Fraser University's graduate Resource and Environmental Management program, and the former Executive Director of the Sierra Legal Defence Fund. He is a frequent contributor to the Globe and Mail.

Municipal Groundwater Study Initiated

Prince Edward County, Belleville, Stone Mills, Centre Hastings, Tweed, Tyendinaga, Hastings Highlands, Bancroft, Madoc, Carlow/Mayo Townships

A Municipal Groundwater Study has been initiated for Prince Edward County, Belleville, Stone Mills, Centre Hastings, Tweed, Tyendinaga, Hastings Highlands, Bancroft, Madoc, Carlow/Mayo Townships. The project is managed by Quinte Conservation, with technical studies by Dillon Consulting, Lissom Earth Sciences, Ainley Group, and Agricultural Watershed Associates.

QRGS is to: "understand and map the local groundwater system and its susceptibility to contamination." Individual wellhead protection studies will be completed for municipal well systems in the Village of Madoc(Centre Hastings); Village of Tweed(Municipality of Tweed) and the Peat's Point Subdivision(Prince Edward). The study will recommend strategies to protect and manage the groundwater resource.

Input into this study will help to:

  • Identify and incorporate local knowledge and information into the study;

  • Increase community awareness of the importance of groundwater as a resource;

  • Ensure that stakeholders have a say in recommendations for groundwater protection measures.

The public are invited to attend the first in a series of OPEN HOUSES. Speak with project team members, view displays with specific information about the study, steps, schedule, general information on groundwater.
